Huskies Within Striking Distance At NCAAs

May 7, 2009

SEATTLE, Wash. -- After a rocky first day at the NCAA Central Regional, the Huskies are right in the thick of things.

'We didn't shoot our way out of it. That's the good news,' said UW head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'We've got to start well -- that's all you need is just one hot round in these things. We're right there.'

The Dawgs are sitting in a three-way tie for 11th place at 308, which is just five strokes and three places out of qualifying for the NCAA Championship. The top eight teams advance to Ohio for a chance at collegiate golf's top honor. The Scarlett Course on the campus of Ohio State University, proved difficult for most team, as just one finished under par. UCLA leads the field by 11 strokes at 4-under (284) and the Bruins also have Stephanie Kono and Maria Jose Uribe tied atop the leader board at 3-under (69).

''You're not going to see too many rounds under par at this course,' Mulflur said. 'That's why we'd be in a really good spot shooting just four- or five-over.'

Washington was 20-over on the day Thursday. Leading Huskies in the team standings was freshman Sadena Parks, who bounced back from a difficult Pac-10 Championship performance and thrived on the national competition, shooting a 3-over 75 to finish day one in a tie for 23rd place.

'Sadena was just really comfortable out there and, aside from just a little hiccup in the middle of her round, kept making pars,' Mulflur said. 'That is really impressive to see a freshman play that well in just her first regional.'

Following Parks for the Huskies were Anya Alvarez and Christina Yoon (77) in a tie for 47th place with Molly Aronsson (79) in 70th place. Sophomore Karinn Dickinson finished in a tie for 88th place, shooting an 82. The Huskies begin from the 10th tee on Friday at 8 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available at
