The No. 40-ranked California men's tennis team (11-11, 2-4 Pac-10) had its season cut short at the hands of No. 17 Pepperdine (20-9, 5-0 WCC) today at the Taube Family Tennis Center in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. The Golden Bears were making their school-record 10th consecutive appearance in the championship tournament.

Cal started the day in a hole as the Waves claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two courts. Hugh Clarke and Mahmoud Kamel teamed up to get an 8-3 win against senior Eoin Heavey and sophomore Bozhidar Katsarov at No. 2 doubles to post a Pepperdine advantage. At the top court, No. 19-ranked senior Geoff Chizever and sophomore Pedro Zerbini fought tooth and nail with the No. 8-ranked team in the nation of Omar Altmann and Bassam Beidas but were pulled under by the Waves in an 8-5 loss. With the doubles point decided, the match at court three was abandoned without a winner.

The Waves swelled their lead to 2-0 as singles matches got under way with No. 44-ranked Altmann posting a 6-0, 6-0 win against Heavey at the No. 2 court. Pepperdine continued to push and took a commanding 3-0 lead with Kamel's 6-1, 6-4 win over Katsarov at No. 4 singles.

Down three points, the Bears put up a fight and earned their first point when freshman Thai Tu recorded his 20th singles win of the year with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Alex Moreno at court five. The celebration was short-lived however, as Pepperdine closed out the victory next when No. 120-ranked Alex Llompart defeated freshman Nick Andrews at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 7-5. Andrews had fought hard to stay afoot with Llompart but succumbed in the end to surrender the 4-1 win to the Waves.

The Bears complete the season with an 11-11 overall record and made their school-record 10th consecutive trip to the NCAA championship tournament. Chizever and Zerbini will travel to College Station, Texas, for the NCAA Men's Doubles Championship, taking place May 20-25. Stay tuned to for more details.
