Four Cougs Reach NCAA RQ Marks at Vandal Jamboree Meet

EUGENE, Ore. -- Washington State junior Kyle Schauble is in eighth place in the decathlon after the first day of the combined events Saturday at the Pacific-10 Track & Field Championships at Oregon's Hayward Field.

Schauble, from Kennewick, Wash., scored 3,372 points in the first five events of the 10-event, two-day competition. WSU freshman Sean Harris (Kent, Wash.) is in 11th place with a first-day personal-best of 3,240 points. Oregon's Ashton Eaton leads the 14-man decathlon competition with 4,309 points after having the top mark in all five events.

Schauble opened the day with a season-best 100m dash time of 11.20w seconds and long jumped a wind-aided distance of 21-feet, 6 inches (6.55m). He threw the shot put 32-5 (9.88m), high jumped 5-8 1/2 (1.74m) and ran the 400m in a season-best time of 50.51. Harris ran the 100m in a PR time of 11.53 and long jumped a PR distance of 19-10 1/4w (6.05m). He threw the shot put 40-0 1/2 (12.20m), high jumped 6-2 1/4 (1.89m), and ran a 400m PR time of 55.66.

WSU's Angela Jensen (sophomore, Tacoma) is in ninth place after the first four events of the women's heptathlon with a first day total of 2,895 points. Jensen ran the 100m hurdles in a PR time of 14.09, high jumped 5-0 1/2 (1.54m), threw the shot put 25-6 1/4 (7.78m), and ran the 200m in a PR time of 25.10W. Oregon's Brianne Theisen leads the 12-woman heptathlon competition with a first-day total of 3,584 points.

The Pac-10 multi-events championships continue Sunday.

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Four Cougars reached NCAA Regional Qualifying marks at the Vandal Outdoor Jamboree meet Saturday at the Dan O'Brien Track at the University of Idaho.

Shawn Swartz (freshman, Port Coquitlam, B.C.) won the men's high jump with an NCAA RQ height of 6-feet, 10 3/4 inches (2.10m), and Christian Crain (freshman, Seattle) won the men's long jump with a lifetime-best and NCAA RQ distance of 24-1 (7.34m). J Hopkins (freshman, Everett) won the men's 400m hurdles with an NCAA RQ time of 52.07, although he has already run a faster time of 51.57 this season.

WSU sophomore Alexa Huestis (Chehalis) won the women's pole vault with an NCAA RQ height of 12-7 1/2 (3.85m), but cleared 12-8 last weekend.

Candace Missouri won the women's long jump with a leap of 17-9 (5.41m) and Jessica Yates won the women's triple jump with a PR distance of 39-3 3/4 (11.98m).

A pair of Cougar freshmen reached personal-best marks Saturday: Ezra John Griffey ran a time of 10.99 for third in the 100m, and Jake Baertlein cleared 15-7 (4.75m) for fourth place in the pole vault.

Reaching season-bests were Sean Wilson in the men's triple jump with a leap of 47-3 3/4w (14.42m), and Anna Albrecht in the women's shot put with a toss of 44-9 1/2 (13.65m).

The Cougar men's and women's team will compete next weekend in the Pac-10 Championships at Eugene.
