Husky Women Miss NCAA Championships

May 9, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Washington women's season ended on Saturday with a 10th-place finish (308-300-319 927) at the NCAA Regional tournament at The Ohio State University's Scarlett Course.

'We had it right in our grasp, but we just let it go,' said coach Mary Lou Mulflur after an emotional day that saw most teams scoring at least 20-over. 'We had it at the turn, but we just had too many big holes.'

The top eight teams and two individuals not from those eight teams advanced to the NCAA Championship at Owing Mills, Md. Leading the Huskies, and drawing praise from Mulflur, was freshman Sadena Parks, who finished 13-over (229) for the tournament and in a tie for 20th place. The second individual to advance was decided by a playoff between two players that tied for 18th place.

'I told her that she had a chance to make it as an individual and she hit some really good shots that almost made that happen in the last few holes, but she was just short,' Mulflur said.

The Huskies missed the cut by five strokes, behind the advancing UT Chattanooga and ninth-place Georgia State. Following Parks in the standings for the Huskies was Molly Aronsson, who finished tied for 27th place (230), Karin Dickinson tied for 51st (235), Anya Alvarez tied for 61st (238) and Christina Yoon tied for 69th (240). Winning the tournament was UCLA at 877, and the medalist was Bruin Maria Jose Uribe at 4-under (212).
