Three Pac-10 Men's Tennis Teams Advance To The NCAA's Round Of 16

Play Continued Saturday in the 2009 NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Championships as three Pac-10 men's teams and one women's team has played its way into the Round of 16. The other five Conference women's teams in the draw opened play Saturday, all five advancing to the second round.

On the men's side, seventh-seeded UCLA (18-4) ended Hawaii's season with a 4-0 victory to earn the program's 33rd staight trip to the Round of 16. The Bruins will face Miami (16-8) next Thursday, May 14, at 6 p.m. CT in College Station, Texas. The Hurricanes upset 10th-seeded Florida, 4-3 on Saturday.

Eighth-seeded USC improved its record to 21-5 with a 4-0 win over Minnesota in Los Angeles, Saturday. The Trojans will meet Pac-10 rival Stanford (20-5) in the Round of 16 on Thursday, May 14, at Noon CT in College Station, Texas. The two split the regular season series, each winning on the other team's home courts. The Cardinal, the ninth-seed in the draw, avenged its 2008 NCAA Second Round loss to Pepperdine, downing the Waves 4-1, Saturday.

Both Arizona and Washington fell in its second round matches Saturday. The Wildcats lost to Texas A&M (16-8), 0-4, and finish the season with a 15-8 record. The Huskies dropped their match at Texas (20-6), 0-4, ending the season with a 15-8 overall

On the women's side, eighth-seeded California took out Texas, 4-1, in Berkeley, becoming the first Pac-10 women's team to punch its ticket to the Round of 16. The Golden Bears will take on ninth-seeded Georgia Tech (18-7) Friday, May 15, at 3 p.m. CT in College Station, Texas.

The rest of the women's squads competed in first round action Saturday, with all five teams advancing to the second round.

Playing in Los Angeles, Pac-10 Champion USC, the seventh seed in the women's draw, dismantled Fairfield, 4-0. The Trojans, making their 18th consecutive NCAA appearance, improved to 21-2 and extended their winning streak to 13 matches. Also playing at USC's Marks Stadium Saturday was Washington. The Huskies (17-7) defeated San Diego State, 4-0, and will face USC at Noon PT Sunday for the right to move on to the Round of 16.

Just across town, 11th-seeded UCLA (18-6) swept Boston University, 4-0, in its first NCAA Tournament match since winning the 2008 team title. The Bruins will also face a Pac-10 foe Sunday, as Arizona State topped UNLV, 4-0, improving its record to (12-8). The Bruins and Sun Devils will square off at Noon PT.

Thirteenth-seeded Stanford also finds its way into the second round after blanking Wichita State, 4-0, Saturday in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal (18-4) will host LSU (14-10) in the second round Sunday, at 1 p.m. PT.
