USC Falls At Cal State Northridge, 7-4

May 9, 2009

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - John Parham and Richard Cates had three hits each Saturday as the Cal State Northridge Matadors scored seven unanswered runs for the 7-4 non conference victory over the USC Trojans.

Cal State Northridge starter Ryan Juarez allowed four runs, all in the first, but came back to keep the Trojans scoreless. Juarez went 6 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts for the Matadors (19-29). Jimmy Jolicoeur, P.J. Rousey and Brian Slover combined for 2 2/3 no-hit innings in relief.

Alex Sherrod, Anthony Vasquez and Joe De Pinto had two hits each for the Trojans. Junior starter Brad Boxberger struggled for his second straight start, giving up four runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings with four walks and three strikeouts.

In the top of the first, Mike O'Neill singled, followed by Sherrod's double for USC (23-24). A passed ball charged against CSUN catcher Parham scored O'Neill and Grant Green walked to put runners at first and third. Freshman first baseman Ricky Oropesa singled to left and Vasquez loaded the bases with a bunt single to third. Juarez then walked Hector Rabago to force in a run and the final run came when designated hitter Beau Brett grounded into a double play, scoring Oropesa from third.

Northridge cut the deficit in half with two in the first. C.J. Belanger led off with a double, advancing to third on a Boxberger wild pitch. Cates grounded into a double play as Belanger scored and with two outs, Ryan Pineda doubled down the third base and scored on Parham's RBI single.

In the Northridge third, the Matadors loaded the bases after Boxberger allowed two walks. Parham singled to left to score another run, but Cates was thrown out at home on a strong throw from left by O'Neill. One inning later with two outs, Tommy Simis looked to be picked off at first. During the rundown, Oropesa was called for interference as Simis was awarded second base and scored the tying run when Belanger hit a double to right.

Cates singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and stole second. Parham brought him home with a single to left center as the Matardors took the 5-4 lead off USC reliever Chad Smith (3-4). CSUN added two more runs off Smith in the seventh on an RBI double by Pineda and RBI single from Brian Slover to cap the scoring.
