Women's Tennis Takes NCAA Opener, 4-0
May 9, 2009
LOS ANGELES - The Husky women's tennis team picked up its first NCAA tournament win in four years today, stifling San Diego State, 4-0, in the first round at USC's Marks Stadium. Washington (17-7) advances to the Regional final where they will face either 7th-seeded USC or Fairfield tomorrow at 12 noon.
This is UW's 11th appearance in the NCAA tourney and second in a row, yet this was their first win since the 2005 season, and the first win for fourth-year head coach Jill Hultquist. Washington had swept San Diego State last month during the regular season, and came through with another shutout win today, although the Aztecs hung tough.
'The theme today was just taking care of business. We had beaten them before and knew this was a winnable match so we just tried not to lose sight of what we had to do,' said Hultquist. 'It feels really good for this team to get its first NCAA win, and it's great to be among the final 32 teams, but we're hungry for more.'
Washington took control of the match during doubles play. The 47th-ranked tandem of junior Joyce Ardies and freshman Denise Dy dominated Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Sophomore Venise Chan and junior Aleksandra Malovic then earned an 8-5 win over Roxanne and Sierra Ellison to clinch the point. Sophomore Lina Xu and freshman Samantha Smith were leading 6-2 at No. 3 when the point was clinched.
Smith made sure her singles match would not be stopped prematurely, as she pasted Milana Yusupov, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to put the Dawgs up 2-0. Malovic then prevailed in a second set battle with Sierra Ellison at No. 6 singles, completing a 6-3, 7-5 win and putting UW one win away.
'Samantha just dismantled her opponent,' Hultquist said. 'The girl was a little impatient so I knew Sam's game would be really effective. She did everything right, was patient, and was able to roll.'
Ardies beat Chan and Xu to the finish line in singles, as she gained momentum after a close first set at No. 5 singles and ended up rolling over Olivia Colman, 7-5, 6-0. Chan was one game away from a win over Trunk at No. 1 singles, leading 6-0, 6-5, and Xu was up 6-1, 4-3 over Esther Cadua at third singles when the match was suspended.
Washington will likely need to get past the Pac-10 Champion Trojans tomorrow in order to reach the Sweet-16 for the first time since 2004. USC beat UW, 4-3, in Seattle earlier in the season. The winner of the Regional will advance to College Station, Texas for the final rounds of the team championship, starting May 15.
