Senior Shevell Quinley earned a provisional qualification to the NCAA National Championships while Chris McGovern came points shy of his own as the Wildcats finished up the second day of competition at the 2009 Pac-10 Combined Event Championships Sunday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Quinley scored 5401 points on the weekend in the heptathlon, putting together a strong second day to put her well over the provisional qualifying mark and just shy of an automatic score of 5500. The score was Quinley's best this season.
In the first event of the day, Quinley took second place in the long jump with a mark of 5.95m (19-6 1/4) which was just shy of her season's best. Quinley followed up that performance by winning the javelin throw with one of the top throws of her career at 41.11m (134-10).
Quinley's strong performances on the second day helped her to a seventh place finish though she was just 89 points out of fifth, the tiniest of margins in the heptathlon.
Sophomore Chris McGovern had a career day in the men's decathlon, scoring a personal best of 6829 points. the mark was just 71 points shy of scoring an NCAA Championship provisional qualification.
McGovern scored personal best of four of the final five events on Sunday to help lead him to the score. He opened up the day with a sixth place, 15.50 performance in the 110-meter hurdles and followed that by setting a personal best of 34.53m (113-03) in the discus throw.
He finished fourth among all athletes in the pole vault with a mark of 4.65m (15-3) and then a career best throw of 51.70m (169-7) to finish fifth in the javelin throw. McGovern wrapped up the evening with another career best of 4:44.31 to bump him up to sixth place overall in the decathlon, an improvement over last season's eighth place finish in the same event.
The 2009 Pac-10 Conference Championships will resume next weekend as the rest of the team will hit the track at Hayward Field as both look to bring home their first ever conference titles.
