Sandys Finishes 12th, Grant 13th in Decathlon at Pac-10 Multi Meet

TEMPE - Two members of the Arizona State University track and field team finished the decathlon at the Pac-10 Multi Championships on Sunday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., as Jamie Sandys finished 12th overall and Duggan Grant taking 13th. Both true freshman completed the two-day, 10-event competition with several personal best marks recorded between the two Sun Devils.
Sandys, who entered the day in 12th place, scored a personal-best total of 6,202 points, surpassing his previous best of 6,033 scored in March. He opened the day with a personal-best time of 15.75 in the 110m hurdles before recording a toss of 31.70m (104-00) in the discus. Sandys then cleared a personal-best height of 3.75m (12-03.50) in the pole vault before tossing a personal-best mark of 45.74m (150-01) in the javelin. He closed out the day by lowering his personal best time in the 1,500m run by six seconds to 4:47.44.
Grant, in his first decathlon of the season, opened the day with a time of 16.48 in the hurdles before tossing the discus 29.10m (95-06). He then cleared 4.45m (14-07.25) in the pole vault to move into 12th place in the overall standings before throwing the javelin 45.18m (148-03) to remain in 12th. In the 1,500m run, he clocked in at 4:54.45 and slipped to 13th as his teammate moved back into 12th place.
The Sun Devil teams will head to Eugene next weekend to participate in the remaining events of the Pac-10 Championships at Hayward Field on Saturday and Sunday. The women will look to defend the conference crowns they have won each of the past three seasons while the men will look to get over the hump after taking second each of the past two seasons.
