BYU Edges Diamond Dawgs, 4-2
May 12, 2009
SEATTLE - Starter Marc Oslund allowed only two runs over seven innings to lead BYU to a narrow, 4-2 win over the Washington baseball team Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Chaffey Field at Husky Ballpark.
Oslund improved to 6-1 with the victory. He struck out eight and gave up six hits. UW starter Ben Guidos (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on five hits over five and two-thirds innings.
Washington dropped to 23-25 on the season while the Cougars improved to 28-21.
BYU was first to score as Sean McNaughton led off the third by tripling off the wall in center field. A groundout from Stetson Banks drove him in, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
The lead remained in tact until the fifth, when Husky first baseman Troy Scott belted a leadoff home run to right, tying the score at 1-1. It was the ninth of the year for the sophomore from Auburn.
In the top of the sixth, a two-out RBI single from BYU shortstop Brandon Relf drove in Steve Parker to put the Cougars back on top, 2-1. In the eighth, the Cougars added a third run when Michael Bowen scored on an error by Husky third baseman Aaron Russell.
The Huskies had a great chance to get back into the game in the bottom of the eight, loading the bases with no outs. But, reliever Brandon Michon came on and struck out Jake Rife on a 3-2 pitch. Closer Jordan Muir then replaced Michon and Kyle Conley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, but Muir fanned Scott to end the threat with BYU still on top, 3-2.
The Cougars added a fourth run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Kent Walton.
Muir pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 11th save of the season.
The two-game series concludes with another 6:30 p.m. game Wednesday, the final home game of the year for the UW. This Saturday through Monday, the Dawgs face Arizona in a three-game, Pac-10 series in Tucson.
