Women's Soccer Spring Wrap-Up: Beavers Ready for 2009 Season
May 12, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team recently wrapped up its spring campaign as the Beavers, led by second-year head coach Linus Rhode, return 10 starters from last season and used the spring to prepare an experienced group for the upcoming 2009 season.
'Overall, it was a good spring,' Rhode said. 'We return a good number of players from last year so the team had a lot to play for throughout the spring. I thought we finished strong and the team is really looking forward to getting back on the field in August.'
The Beavers played a challenging 2009 spring slate as Oregon State closed out the year with a 2-1 victory over in-state rival Oregon. Red Nixon and Chelsea Buckland scored goals for Oregon State in the victory over the Ducks.
'It was a good way to close out the season,' Rhode said. 'It was good to get a win as the game against Oregon wrapped up a challenging schedule. I think the schedule brought out the highest level of play from our team and will help us when we return to the field next year.'
Perhaps the highlight of the spring season was a home match against the U-23 United States Women's National Team. The Beavers hosted the squad as it prepared for the summer tour season as fans who attended the match were asked to donate canned foods to Community Outreach.
Although the Beavers fell to the national squad, 3-1, Oregon State collected over 300 cans of food for the community program. Transfer Melinda Ingalls scored the lone Oregon State goal in the match as the Beavers outshot the national team, 7-1, over the final 45 minutes.
'I thought the match against the national team was one of the highlights of the spring season,' Rhode said. 'Our team had the chance to play against the best players in the country in that age group and I thought it was a great experience. Combined with the food drive, it was a great event.'
Oregon State will return to the field in August as the Beavers will open the 2009 season on Friday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. when they host Portland State.
