Cal Competes in Pac-10 Outdoor Championships This Week

California heads to Eugene, Ore., this weekend for the Pac-10 Outdoor Championships from May 16-17. Running events begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with the prelims of the women's 4x100 and on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the final of the women's 4x100. The Cal men are currently ranked No. 17 in the USTFCCCA rankings and the Cal women are just outside of the Top 25 at No. 28.
Last Time Out: Mills-Bunje Takes Fourth at Pac-10 Multis
At last weekend's Pac-10 Multi Event Championships in Eugene, Ore., sophomore Kyle Mills-Bunje came in fourth in the decathlon with a personal-best 7,007 points. Mills-Bunje's score was also an NCAA provisional-regional-qualifying mark. Highlighting his performance was taking second in the javelin and the shot put, with his marks of177-11 (54.22m) in the javelin and 40-10.25 (12.45m) in the shot put. Redshirt freshman Kevin Kuechler came in 14th with a career-high 5,362 points.
Cal competed in the Sacramento Open last weekend with the women's pole vaulters taking the top three spots. Sophomore Allison Stokke recorded a new personal best, surpassing her previous PR by four inches with her first-place mark of 13-9.75 (4.21m). That score ranks second all time in school history, tied for fourth in the conference rankings. Stokke won Pac-10 Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors on Monday.
Last Year's Pac-10 Outdoor Championships
The Bears claimed three Pac-10 titles at least year's conference meet: Alysia Johnson (800), Ed Wright (High Jump), Kimyon Broom (100-Meter Hurdles). The Cal men finished in fourth place with 81.5 points, while the Cal women tied with Washington State for sixth place with 71.5 points. Broom's time of 13.17 in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles also set the school record. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, junior Jake Hanson took second with a personal-best time of 49.82, breaking 50.00 for the first time.
In the NCAA rankings
The Bears in the NCAA's Top 10 are Michael Coe, who is ranked No. 6 in the 1500 based on his mile time (3:56.18), while junior Ryan Young is fourth in the javelin (250-10, 76.45m) and senior Martin Maric is No. 4 in the discus 198-6 (60.52m). On the women's side, senior Inika McPherson is No. 6 in the high jump (6-0, 1.83m), Kimyon Broom is No. 7 in the 100-meter hurdles (13.08) and Allison Stokke is No. 9 in the pole vault (4.21m).

Cal currently boasts 33 NCAA regional qualifiers, 15 on the women's team and 18 on the men's team. The regional qualifiers are - Brook Turner (400), Cherrelle Garret (100, 200), Debra Maier (5000), the women's 4x100 and 4x400, Allison Stokke (Pole Vault), Inika McPherson (High Jump), Kristen Meister (High Jump), Artensia Young (Triple Jump), Tracey Stewart (triple jump), Katie Morgan (Pole Vault), Evelyn Smith (400-H), Cyrena Giordano (Pole Vault), Kimyon Broom (100-meter hurdles), Kellan Patterson (100), Michael Coe (mile), the men's 4x100, Jordan Paul (110-H), Jake Hanson (400-H), Francis Gadayan (800), Yosef Ghebray (1500, 5000, 10,000), Eric Lee (1500), Kari Karlsson (5000), Martin Maric (Discus, Javelin), Patrick Kowalsky (Shot Put), Ryan Shuler (Pole Vault), Sebastian Sam (800), Ryan Young (Javelin) and Kyle Mills-Bunje was a provisional qualifier in the decathlon.
Cal competes at the NCAA West Regional in Eugene, Ore. in two weeks (May 29-30).
