BERKELEY - The No. 35-ranked California women's tennis doubles team of senior Claire Ilcinkas and sophomore Marina Cossou learned this week that they will be one of 32 duos competing in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Doubles Championship, head coach Amanda Augustus announced. The Golden Bear tandem had previously been selected as an alternate team but received word that another team had pulled out of the competition late last week.
Cossou and Ilcinkas lead Cal with a 19-11 record and posted a 9-7 mark in dual matches. The pair will be joined in the doubles tournament by the seventh-ranked team of sophomore Mari Andersson and freshman Jana Juricova. Each player will be doing double-duty as all four are part of a record-breaking five Bears entered in the singles field of 64. Senior Bojana Bobusic will also be competing in the singles championship.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 15-19). Texas A&M University, College Station, will serve as the host institution for the championships.
The No. 9-ranked and eighth-seeded Bears (19-4, 7-1 Pac-10) are set to face No. 8-ranked and ninth-seeded Georgia Tech (18-7, 9-2 ACC) in the round of 16 of the NCAA team championship. Cal will take on the Yellow Jackets for the second time this season in a 1 p.m. PT match this Friday, May 15. The Bears won the first meeting, 5-2, at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 14.
