Valerie Arioto, Marissa Drewrey, and Jamia Reid Named All-Region
May 14, 2009
Arioto, an All-Pac-10 First Team selection this season, posted a .344 batting average as a first baseman and a 2.45 ERA in the circle. Arioto led the Bears with ten home runs and 34 RBI. She was 14-8 as a pitcher this season. Arioto has also played errorless ball this season, with a 1.000 fielding percentage in 216 chances.
Reid was a Second Team All-Pac-10 honoree in her rookie season. Reid was the conference stolen base leader and ranked third in the nation with 45 steals this season. She also led the Bears in batting with a .345 average. She hit seven home runs, drove in 25 runs, and scored 36 times.
Drewrey led the Bears with a 21-10 record and a 2.24 ERA. She was ranked third in the Pac-10 in strikeouts with 222.
Both Drewrey and Arioto were named Second Team All-Pacific Region in 2008.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region teams honors student-athletes from 10 NFCA regions. A total of 264 players from 121 different institutions comprise the regional teams. A change this year is the announcement of just one team per region (First Team), although the team has the same number of members of the previous year's first and second teams combined. The change gives the regional representatives more leeway in presenting candidates for All-America selection.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
The NFCA Division I All-American teams will be announced Wednesday, May 27.
