CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior Jared Prince was 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Washington State past Oregon State 7-6 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Friday.

Sophomore Garry Kuykendall added a career-high three hits for Washington State (27-21, 15-7 Pac-10). Senior Matt Way (8-4) pitched six and one-third innings for the victory. Redshirt-junior Jeremy Johnson recorded the final eight outs for his ninth save.

'It was a tough, tough, Friday night game in the Pac-10,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'Offensively, we were as good as we have been in a long time. I didn't think Matt (Way) had his best stuff tonight, but he grinded it out and Jeremy (Johnson) was outstanding out of the bullpen.'

The Cougars jumped on Oregon State (30-15, 12-10 Pac-10) starter Tanner Robles (1-2) for three runs in the first inning. Kuykendall led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by sophomore Shea Vucinich. One out later, Prince drilled a ball inside the bag at first for a RBI-double. Freshman Derek Jones knocked in Prince with a single to left. After redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano was hit by a pitch, junior Michael Weber singled through the left side to score Jones.

The Beavers tallied a run in the second, but WSU answered in the third when senior Greg Lagreid was hit by a pitch, Prince doubled and Jones singled.

OSU scored twice in the bottom of the third, and again the Cougars responded, this time with a two-run fourth. Redshirt-sophomore Cody Bartlett led off with a home run to put WSU on top 5-3. Kuykendall followed with a single. With one out, he moved to second on a wild pitch and with two outs scored on a single by Prince.

In the sixth, the Cougars increased their lead to 7-3 on a one-out single by Kuykendall, a walk to Vucinich, and a two-out hit by Prince.

The Beavers chipped away with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to cut their deficit to 7-5. Adalberto Santo opened the eighth with a home run off Johnson that pulled OSU within a run. The Beavers put runners at second and third with one out, but Johnson fanned John Tommasini and induced Michael Miller to ground out to end the threat. Johnson retired the Beavers in order in the ninth on three ground balls.

The series continues, Saturday at 2 p.m.
