May 15, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore – Junior Paul Peterson shot a 3-under par 69 as the Oregon State men’s golf team moved up three spots on the leaderboard after two rounds at the NCAA Regional in Daly City, Calif. which is hosted by the University of San Francisco.
The Beavers went into the second round with nothing to lose after digging themselves into a hole after the first round. The nothing to lose attitude paid dividends as they improved by 17 strokes posted 19 birdies and two eagles as a team on the day.
“Today’s round was one of the best rounds we’ve had all year from tee to green,” Oregon State men’s golf head coach Brian Watts said. “We didn’t take advantage of our opportunities on the green. We gave ourselves a lot of looks but didn’t make many putts.”
Peterson, coming off his worst round of the year, shot a second round 69 which improved his score by 10 strokes from the first round. He had seven birdies during the second round compared to two in the first round.
Alex Williams put together a 2-under 70 during round two and is the highest ranked Beaver going into the final round being tied for 27th. He had six birdies during the second round.
Morten Madsen shot an even par 72 during the second round, improving by three strokes from the second round and recorded his second eagle of the tournament. He is sitting at 3-over with a 147 (75-72) and is tied for 49th.
Diego Velasquez is also tied for 49th at 3-0ver and had three birdies and one eagle during the days round.
Alex Moore is 5-over headed into the final round and is tied for 63rd.
“We have to continue doing what we did today and if we can make a few more putts we have an outside chance of moving on,” Watts said. “They all played well today and we gave ourselves many opportunities but unfortunately it didn’t happen today.”
Arizona State leads all teams at 22-under after going 13-under during the second round. Jesper Kennegard of Arizona State leads all individuals and is 10-under.
The Beavers tee off the final round Saturday starting at 9:20 a.m. and are paired with UC Davis and Colorado.
