USC Avoids Series Sweep With 5-2 Win Over Stanford
May 17, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Brad Boxberger struck out eight in six innings Sunday as the USC Trojans averted a Pac-10 Conference sweep with the 5-2 victory over the Stanford Cardinal. Senior right-hander Daniel Cooper (Costa Mesa/Rice) threw three scoreless innings in relief for the save as he and teammate Anthony Vasquez were recognized on Senior Day at Dedeaux Field.
Boxberger (5-3) struck out the first five batters he faced and held off the Cardinal after Stanford (29-22, 12-12) took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. A quartet of Trojans (Mike O'Neill, Grant Green, Brandon Garcia and Billy Pinkerton) had two hits apiece as USC improved to 25-27 on the season, 11-13 in Pac-10 play.
O'Neill used an infield single to reach safely in the bottom of the first and moved to second on Joe De Pinto's sacrifice. He scored on Ricky Oropesa's single to left for the early 1-0 lead. The only damage against Boxberger came in the third on Toby Gerhart's seventh homer on the season with a two-run shot to center.
The Trojans knocked out Stanford starter Michael Marshall (0-1) in the fifth with two runs. Garcia walked and Pinkerton doubled for runners at second and third. Alex Sherrod singled to center to tie the game and O'Neill grounded out for the eventual game-winning run.
After a Trojan run in the sixth, Green capped the scoring in the seventh with a solo shot to center off reliever Drew Storen.
USC concludes the regular season this week. The Trojans host UC Riverside in their final home game on Tuesday (May 19) at 6:30 p.m. before a Pac-10 Conference series at California, Friday-Sunday (May 22-24), with Friday's game being broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
