Wildcats Take Series With 9-5 Win

May 18, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona scored five runs in the first and held on to beat Washington, 9-5, Monday in a Pac-10 game at Jerry Kindall Field.

The Wildcats (27-24 overall and 10-14 in the Pac-10) won their seventh conference game in their last nine. The Huskies, who dropped into a tie for fourth place alongside Oregon State, saw their slim postseason hopes take a hit as they fell to 25-27 overall and 13-11 in the Pac-10. The UW would need to win all three next weekend at WSU to even be considered for an NCAA berth as they must finish with a record over .500.

UW freshman starter Andrew Kittredge (4-4) failed to make it out of the first, allowing five runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning for the loss.

Wildcats reliver Joe Allison (4-1) was credited with the win. He came on in the fifth and worked one and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Arizona rallied for a big inning in the first. With two outs and only one runner on, seven straight Wildcat batters reached base. Bobby Coyle, Dwight Childs and Rafael Valenzuela each drove in one run with a single while Hunter Pace's bases-loaded single scored two, staking Arizona to a 5-0 lead after one.

Washington worked its way back into the game with a three-run third. After a pair of walks, Jake Rife belted a one-out single to the right-field corner, scoring both. After a second out, Troy Scott doubled to send in Rife, cutting the lead to 5-3.

In the fourth, UW freshman Caleb Brown tripled and scored on a David Bentrott sacrifice fly to cut the Arizona lead to 5-4.

However, in the bottom of the fourth, the Cats stretched the lead back to four runs as they scored three more with two outs. A triple from Pace drove in a pair and then he scored on a double from Childs to make it an 8-4 lead.

In the fifth, UW junior Kyle Conley tripled and scored on an error to make it 8-5.

Pace, who scored again in the sixth, finished 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead Arizona. Rife paced the Dawgs, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double and a triple.

Next up for the Huskies is a regular season-ending, three-game series at Washington State next Friday through Sunday. Subscribers can listen to live audio broadcasts at the Dawg Channel at gohuskies.com.
