May 19, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Tyler Waldron pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out 10 as the Beavers gave head coach Pat Casey his 500th win at Oregon State with a 2-0 victory over Oregon in front of 2,564 at Goss Stadium on Tuesday.
The win makes Casey 500-311-4 at Oregon State in his career. He has led the Beavers to at least 30 wins in 10 of his 15 seasons at Oregon State in addition to national championships in 2006 and 2007. Casey earned his first victory at Oregon State with a 4-3 win over Western Oregon on Feb. 22, 1995.
He is now one of three OSU coaches to win at least 500 in their tenure with the Beavers. Jack Riley won 613 from 1973-94 and Ralph Coleman won 561 in four different stints from 1923-66.
Making his second consecutive Tuesday start, Waldron was dominant while improving his record to 5-3. The righty struck out a career-high 10, including striking out the side in the second inning. Waldron retired 15 consecutive Oregon hitters from the third until the eighth inning.
Over the last two starts, Waldron has struck out 18 hitters in 16 1/3 innings.
Kraig Sitton came on in relief of Waldron with one out and runners on the corners for the Ducks with only one out in the eighth inning. The southpaw used just two pitches to induce a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Caleb Tommasini to end the threat.
Kevin Rhoderick entered in the ninth inning looking for his eighth save of the year. He retired the first two hitters he faced with groundballs to short, and struck out pinch hitter John Adamson to complete the Beavers' second shutout of the season.
John Wallace reached base twice for the Beavers, going 1-for-2 and driving in Adalberto Santos with a double down the right field line to score the Beavers first run of the game in the second. The senior gave himself a three-game hit streak and is hitting .400 (6-for-16) against the Ducks this season with 10 RBI.
Wallace led off the fifth inning with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt by Carter Bell and a groundout to second base by Joey Wong advanced Wallace to third base, Rob Folsom singled up the middle for a two-out RBI to give Oregon State a 2-0 lead.
With the single, Folsom extended his hitting streak to four games and now has 15 RBI this season.
Michael Miller singled in the eighth inning to give himself a three game hitting streak. He stole his third base in the last three games and eighth of the season.
Alex Keudell picked up the loss to drop to 0-5 this season. He allowed four hits and two runs in eight innings of work.
