Chan's NCAA Singles Run Starts Wednesday

SEATTLE - First Team All-Pac-10 sophomore Venise Chan gets underway in the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships on Wednesday, May 20, at Texas A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center.
The draw, released today, has the 19th-ranked Chan matched up against Denver's Mallory Voelker in the first round which will begin at 2:30 p.m. Pacific. Should Chan advance, she would face the winner of the match between 11th-seeded Jana Juricova of Cal and Katrina Tsang of North Carolina.
Voelker earned an automatic bid into the singles tournament by being the highest-ranked player out of the Sun Belt Conference. Voelker, a senior, is ranked 76th and has a 23-4 record overall this year. She led Denver to the NCAA first round where it fell to Mississippi.
Chan is 28-6 overall this season and making her second straight NCAA Singles appearance. She fell in the first round last year. Players can earn All-America honors by reaching the round of 16.
