Andersson and Juricova Receive ITA Northwest Region Awards
May 20, 2009
BERKELEY - California women's tennis newcomers sophomore Mari Andersson and freshman Jana Juricova were each tabbed for Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Region awards earlier this week. No. 11-ranked Juricova was named the region's Rookie of the Year and No. 41-ranked Andersson received the honor of being selected as the region's Player to Watch.
Both players are currently competing in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships. Juricova has posted a team-high 38-6 singles record with a 17-4 mark in dual matches. The first-year Golden Bear also holds a team-high mark with a 31-8 doubles record. Andersson played her first collegiate matches in January and has already earned a 25-5 singles record. She went 8-0 in Pac-10 dual singles matches. Both players are ranked No. 7 as a doubles team and have posted a team-leading 20-3 record together. The two went 14-2 in dual matches at the top doubles court and were recently named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament team.
Juricova becomes Cal's fourth ITA Regional Rookie of the Year. Jennifer Poulos earned the honor in 1992 and was succeeded by Pam Nelson in 1993. Nelson was later named the ITA National Rookie of the Year. In 2001, Raquel Kops-Jones received the regional award once more. Andersson is Cal's first ever ITA Regional Player to Watch.
The No. 9-ranked Bears (22-5, 7-1 Pac-10) finished as the NCAA runner-up for the second consecutive season after falling to No. 3 Duke in the national championship match.
