Juricova and Andersson Continue to Climb at NCAA Championships

May 21, 2009

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - California women's tennis freshman Jana Juricova and sophomore Mari Andersson each advanced to the round of 16 at the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis singles and doubles championships on Thursday (May 21) at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The No. 7-ranked tandem claimed their 21st victory together with a 7-6, 6-3 win over No. 12 Whitney Chappell and Alex Haney of Auburn in the first round of the doubles championship. As the lone Golden Bear still in the singles championship, 11th-ranked Juricova completed a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 76 Mallory Voelker of Denver to advance to the round of 16.

The first time Juricova and Voelker met, Juricova dropped just three games en route to a 6-1, 6-2 win on March 19. The result was much of the same the second time around as Juricova surrendered just four games on her way to a 6-3, 6-1 win. Juricova broke Voelker's serve three times to earn a 6-3 win in the first set as she blasted a backhand shot to the deep corner to complete the victory. In the second set, Voelker won the second game before Juricova claimed control and went on a five-game run. Juricova's last serve overpowered Voelker, who could not return the ball, to award Juricova with her 39th singles win of the year. Juricova draws No. 9 Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia in the round of 16, Friday, May 22.

In other singles matches, No. 26-ranked sophomore Marina Cossou and No. 41 Andersson suffered second-round losses to end their run at the championships. No. 2 Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas wasted no time building a quick 3-0 lead over Cossou but the second-year Bear fought back to break the Razorback serve twice to grab a four-all tie in the first set. With a 6-5 advantage, Miseviciute allowed Cossou into a deuce but stiffened up to finish up with a 7-5 first-set win. The two combatants stayed on serve for nearly all of the second set until Miseviciute broke Cossou's serve in the 11th game to take a familiar 6-5 lead. Again, Miseviciute fended off all of Cossou's attacks to emerge with the 7-5 win in a closely contested battle. Cossou finishes up her sophomore season with a 27-11 record despite missing time with a leg injury.

Andersson faced No. 17 Laura Gioia of Furman in her second round match and started her day off by breaking Gioia's serve for the first game of the match. Gioia broke back, however, to even the score before holding in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. The two continued to break each other's serves the rest of the first set to give Gioia a 6-4 win. Furman's senior took the first points of the second set and continued to build her momentum. Andersson was able to break Gioia's serve once more in the third game to get within a 2-1 deficit but Gioia broke Andersson one last time to gain a 5-1 advantage before taking the final game for a 6-1 win. Andersson completes her first season as a Bear with a 25-6 singles record.

In their first-round doubles match, Andersson and Juricova couldn't shake Chappell and Haney until Andersson held serve to give the Cal duo a 5-3 lead. The Tigers came back, however, to gain a five-all tie and then a six-all tie to force the tiebreaker. The two teams stayed on pace through the breaker as well until Cal took a 6-4 lead. Chappell and Haney got just one more point before Juricova blasted a ball in between both players to seal the 7-5 tiebreaker win for the Bears. The second set wasn't as hotly contested as Andersson and Juricova wore down their opponents to the tune of a 5-3 lead. Andersson's poached shot proved to be too much to handle as Auburn's return went into the net to end the match. The Bears draw No. 19 Michaela Kissell and Laura Vallverdu of Miami in a round of 16 match Friday, May 22.
