Trojans Wrap Up In NCAA Round of 16
May 22, 2009
Both Farah and Johnson had a full slate ahead of them following the Trojans' run to the 2009 NCAA Team Championship, won just days ago at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. A freshman, Steve Johnson worked into the competitive Round of 16 singles with impressive wins on the first two days of individual action. The morning of the Round of 16, Johnson faced fifth-seeded Bruno Agostinelli of Kentucky. Johnson fought hard against his highly ranked opponent, but fell 6-4, 6-1 to close out his first year of action as a Trojan with a 35-13 overall singles record - leading the team in wins on the year.
Later in the afternoon, Johnson got back to action with Robert Farah for doubles play. The pair's dominating run through the 2009 season came to an end, however, as the Trojans dropped their Round of 16 match 6-3, 6-4 to Auburn's Puetz/Tsyrenov. That closed down Farah/Johnson's year with the pair holding a 35-11 overall record to go along with the NCAA team title they helped secure. Farah/Johnson also claimed a place on the NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team for No. 1 doubles.
