May 23, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Freshman Dani Yudin broke the shutout with a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the second-seeded Bruins fell one run short in a 2-1 loss in Game 1 of the Los Angeles Super Regional on Saturday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins drop to 44-10 overall, while the Tigers improve to 49-9. Game 2 of the Super Regional will begin at 12:30 p.m. and will be aired live on ESPNU, with the if necessary Game 3 starting 30 minutes after Sunday's first contest. Gametracker and live audio will also be available at UCLABruins.com, with Darren Preston and 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist and three-time All-American Amanda Freed at the call.
Sophomore Katie Schroeder had two of the Bruins' five hits, but UCLA stranded seven runners on base for the game. Junior Megan Langenfeld (16-2) went the distance for UCLA, allowing two runs, five hits and one walk in seven innings with six strikeouts. She struck out two in both the first and second and one each in the fourth and seventh.
The Tigers got on the board first in the second inning. Micaela Minner led off with a single to left and was pinch-run for by Michaele Vock. One out later, Andee Allen doubled to left-center to bring home Vock and make it 1-0.
Missouri added another in the third. Rhea Taylor had a one-out triple to left-center and came home on Gina Schneider's sacrifice fly to left to increase the Tigers' lead to 2-0.
In the seventh, the Bruins got on the board with Yudin's fourth home run of the season to left on a 3-2 pitch to make it 2-1. But Missouri's Chelsea Thomas got the final three outs on a strikeout, groundout and lineout to hold on for the victory.
Thomas (16-4) allowed one run, five hits and two walks in seven innings with three strikeouts, getting out of jams in the first, fourth and sixth, as the Bruins stranded a pair of runners in each inning. Five different players had hits for the Tigers.
