PULLMAN, Wash. - Redshirt-sophomore Chad Arnold and freshman Adam Conley combined to strike out 14 batters as Washington State defeated Washington 7-1 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The Cougars (30-23, 18-8 Pac-10) have won the first two games of the series against Washington (25-29, 13-13 Pac-10). Arnold (7-3) blanked the Huskies on two hits with a career-high eight strikeouts over five and two-thirds innings. Conley struck out a career-high six in three and one-third innings to notch his first-collegiate save.

'It was tremendous pitching for us today by both Arnold and Conley,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'It is nice to have another series win under our belts.'

The Cougars scored first with a three-run second. Senior Jared Prince led off with a home run against Tyler Cheney (2-3). Freshman Derek Jones was hit by a pitch, redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano beat out a bunt single, and both runners moved up on a sacrifice by junior Michael Weber. Junior Matt Fanelli plated a run with a double and redshirt-sophomore Cody Bartlett picked up a RBI-ground out.

In the fourth, Ponciano led off with a home run and sophomore Matt Argyropoulos belted a two-out solo shot to give WSU a 5-0 lead. Ponciano added a two-run single in the fifth to increase the Cougars' advantage to 7-0.

With two outs in the ninth, Troy Scott ruined WSU's shutout bid with a solo home run to center field. It was the only hit Conley gave up during his stint.

The Cougars and Huskies complete their three-game series, Sunday beginning at noon.

Washington State's 14 strikeouts as a pitching staff raised the Cougars' season total to 415 and broke the school record of 404 set in 2006...redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano collected a career-high three hits...Adam Conley appeared in his 22nd game, tied for second most by a WSU freshman and one shy of the Cougar freshman record held by Rob Nichols (1987).
