Cal Baseball Blanks USC, 6-0

May 24, 2009

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The Cal baseball team ended the 2009 season on a high note, blanking USC, 6-0, behind a complete-game two-hit shutout by junior left-hander Chris Petrini Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who had lost to USC, 4-2, on Friday and, 14-4, Saturday, improved to 24-29 overall and 9-18 in the Pac-10. The Trojans dropped to 28-28 and 13-14 in league. Petrini, from San Bruno (Sacred Heart Cathedral High School), was spectacular, no-hitting USC through 6.2 innings before giving up a single to Hector Rebago in the seventh inning that just got past a diving Cal shortstop Michael Brady. The only other hit Petrini yielded was a double to lead-off the ninth inning by Joe De Pinto that just cleared leaping Bear second baseman Jeff Kobernus. It was the first complete game of Petrini's collegiate career (128 pitches), as he only walked one batter and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts.
