CRCA Announces Awards, Ford Earns West Region Coach of the Year

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Oregon State head coach Emily Ford and rowers Jane Ivey and Melissa Penwell were honored when the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced several national and regional awards Tuesday.
Ford was selected as a one of the CRCA's Regional Coach of the Year winners representing the West Region. This is the third time in her career that Ford has been honored by the CRCA and first as a head coach. In 2004, Ford was selected as the CRCA's Central Regional and National Assistant Coach of the Year.
The Coach of the Year Award is intended to recognize a head coach that fits one or more of the following criteria: Outstanding success during the current season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, fulfilled team's potential and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.
Seniors Jane Ivey and Melissa Penwell were named as CRCA National Scholar-Athletes. Ivey (Nelson, New Zealand) carries a grade-point average of 3.84 while studying Exercise and Sport Science while Penwell (Eugene, Ore./Churchill HS) also has a 3.84 GPA in Ethnic Studies. This year's awards mark the third straight year Ivey and Penwell have received these honors.
Requirements for athletes to be eligible to honored as scholar athletes follow:
The student-athlete has met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution
The student-athlete was in her 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of eligibility
The student-athlete rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event
The head coach of the student-athlete's institution was a member in good standing of the CRCA as of May 1, 2008.
The student-athlete has had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year).
