Morgan and Stokke Score for Cal at NCAA West Regional
May 29, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. -
Senior Katie Morgan and sophomore Allison Stokke both scored for California in the first day of the NCAA West Regional Friday at Hayward Field on the Oregon campus. The two pole vaulters earned a combined seven points for the Golden Bears. In addition, a number of Cal runners advanced to tomorrow's finals in their respective events.
Morgan took fifth with her mark of 13-9.75 (4.21m), while Stokke came in right behind her teammate in sixth (13-1.75, 4.01m).
'Katie and Allison both did well today,' said director of track and field Tony Sandoval. 'They had some tough competition. I think Allison will get an at-large bid to the national championships based on her regular-season best mark.'
A couple of Bears recorded personal bests on Friday. Freshman Sebastian Sam claimed seventh in the prelims of the 800 with a personal-best time of 1:48.82. Senior Francis Gadayan finished in third at 1:50.04. Both runners qualified for tomorrow's final. In the women's 400, senior Kandi Bonty clocked a PR of 53.92, earning a sixth-place finish. Fellow senior Brook Turner tallied the best preliminary time at 53.34, which was also a season best, just shy of her personal-best time of 53.31. Both Turner and Bonty will compete in tomorrow's final.
'There were definitely some bright spots for us today, but there were also some disappointments,' Sandoval said. 'It's all part of the lessons in life that we face. Today was about putting ourselves in a position to move onto the finals and eventually to the national championships.'
Like Turner, sophomore Michael Coe notched the best preliminary time in his event. He crossed the finish line at 3:44.35 in the 1500.
The other Bears who advanced to tomorrow's finals were freshman Cherrelle Garrett (100 meters), senior Jake Hanson (400-meter hurdles), senior Jordan Paul (110-meter hurdles), senior Kellan Patterson and sophomore Nick Porter (100 meters), and both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relays.
