California Golden Bear Pia Halbig won her first tournament of 2009 with a victory at the Slovenian International Ladies Amateur Championship. Playing against the top European amateur talent, the German-born Halbig shot a two-under to win the tournament. Halbig, playing at the Village Course in Moravske Toplice, Slovenia, shot a 71-74-73-72 to win the 72 hole tournament.

'Her consistency over the four rounds is what earned her this championship,' said Cal Head Coach Nancy McDaniel. 'This is how she played for us all year. Always consistent. I am excited for her to earn her first win of 2009 in such an elite field.'

Halbig, the Bear's top golfer in 2008-09, was an honorable mention for NGCA All-American honors and a first team All-Pac-10 honoree. She was the top finisher at the La Quinta Open in the Spring, but this is her first victory of the year in a multi-round tournament.

Halbig will head to the United Kingdom next week, playing in the British Ladies Amateur Championship at Royal St. David's Golf Club, Harlech, Gwynedd, Wales. The match play tournament will have another Cal Bear golfer in the field. Roseanne Niven will also play in the tournament. Niven, a native of Scotland, made it to the semifinals in this same tournament last year when it was played in North Berwick.
