June 3, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. - Right-hander Trevor Bauer of the UCLA baseball team has captured National Freshman Pitcher of the Year honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and joins right-hander Gerrit Cole on the publication's Freshman All-America Team, as announced Wednesday.
Bauer, who has also secured 2009 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors, becomes the first pitcher in school history to have earned Collegiate Baseball's National Freshman Pitcher of the Year accolades.
Bauer and Cole become the first duo of UCLA players to secure Freshman All-America honors since 1998, when the national publication honored infielders Garrett Atkins and Chase Utley on its Freshman All-America team.
Bauer posted a 9-3 record and 2.99 ERA with two saves in 2009, recording 92 strikeouts and 27 walks in a team-leading 105.1 innings. He enrolled at UCLA in January 2009 after having graduated one semester early from Hart High School. Bauer began the season pitching in the bullpen before earning a slot in the starting rotation.
In Pac-10 action, Bauer logged a perfect 7-0 mark and compiled a 2.98 ERA with a team-leading four complete games. He struck out 54 batters and issued 14 walks. As a starting pitcher, he went 7-0 with a 3.16 ERA, recording 67 strikeouts and 19 walks while limiting the opposition to a .217 batting average. He twice earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors.
Through NCAA Regional action, Bauer ranks third among Pac-10 pitchers in innings pitched (105.1) and wins (9), seventh in strikeouts (92), eighth in ERA (2.99) and ninth in opponent average (.225). Additionally, Bauer tied the school record for most wins by a freshman pitcher (Pete Janicki, nine wins in 1990).
Cole finished his freshman season with a 4-8 record and 3.49 ERA, compiling a team-best 104 strikeouts and 38 walks in 85.0 innings. The right-hander from Santa Ana, Calif., currently ranks second in the Pac-10 in opponent batting average (.191) and third in strikeouts (104). In his seven losses as a starting pitcher, he recorded a 3.50 ERA and .193 opponent batting average, as the Bruins' offense managed just 2.0 runs per game.
Through NCAA Regional action, Cole ranks sixth nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (6.04), 17th in strikeouts per nine innings (11.01) and 22nd in total strikeouts (104).
Cole's 104-strikeout total established UCLA's single-season record for strikeouts by a freshman.
