Women's Basketball Participates In Local Community Service

June 8, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Five members of the Oregon State women's basketball team took part in a community service event this past Friday. They participated in a Field Day at Mountain View Elementary school.

The event included approximately 50-60 kindergarteners and involved women's basketball players Stacey Nichols, Talisa Rhea, Kassandra McCalister, Kirsten Tilleman and Julie Futch.

The players spent their time at the school signing autographs and participating in relay events, games of 'knockout' and shoot around.

The day was originally scheduled to include all age levels (K-5) at the school, but weather in the Corvallis forced a change. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable experience for all involved.

'Even though we had to made adjustments to our planned activities due to the weather, we still had a great time with the kids,' Tilleman said. 'You don't realize how much energy kindergarteners have until you get them in a confined space with basketballs. They were a lot of fun to be around.'

The event continues a community service tradition with women's basketball, that recently involved participation in the Relay For Life last month that helps benefit the American Cancer Society. Additionally, on Thursday, Nichols will speak at the Ashbrook School's graduation breakfast.
