OSU Recruit Kyrell Hudson Selected In Third Round Of MLB Draft

June 9, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Incoming Oregon State recruit Kyrell Hudson has been selected in the third round (106th overall) by Philadelphia in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.

Hudson's selection comes toward the end of the first night of the draft, which ultimately goes 50 rounds but lasts just three, including compensation rounds, on Tuesday night. Rounds 4-30 will commence at 9 a.m. on Wednesday while 31-50 wrap up starting Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m.

Hudson signed with Oregon State in February to play football beginning in the 2009 season. Rivals.com ranks him the 81st best athlete in the nation in football and was ranked second in the preaseason in the state of Washington. He played quarterback and was a kick returner at Evergreen High School and was all-league as a junior and senior in football, and all-league as a junior in baseball.

Baseball America ranks Hudson, a native of Vancouver, Wash., as the 59th-best high school prospect in the nation. An outfielder, he was the 18th center fielder taken on Tuesday.

Said MLB.com in a pre-draft evaluation of Hudson: 'Hudson is an extremely gifted athlete. He has plus, plus speed and has shown glimpses of raw power. The concern is that he hasn't shown the ability to make consistent contact to reach that power and will have to learn to hit at the next level. Someone will draft him based on his athleticism and speed, but they'll also know they'll have a project on their hands.'
