USC Shortstop Grant Green Selected 13th Overall In MLB Draft

LOS ANGELES -- USC junior All-America shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) has been selected 13th overall in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft by the Oakland Athletics. Green becomes the eighth Trojan since 1995 to be picked in the first round and the 40th first-rounder in the history of the USC program.

In 160 career games with the Trojans, Green posted a .359 average (231-for-644) with 48 doubles, a school-record 20 triples, 15 home runs, 102 RBI and 32 stolen bases. His 20 triples place him tied for fifth on the Pac-10 Conference's all-time list and his .359 average puts him sixth on the USC career list.

A two-time All-Pac-10 selection, Green batted .374 (79-for-211) this season with 19 doubles, five triples, four home runs, 32 RBI and 16 stolen bases. He earned Baseball America All-America third team honors last year as a sophomore after batting .390 (80-for-205 for the Trojans with nine home runs, 46 RBI and 10 stolen bases. During his 2007 freshman campaign, he hit .316 (72-for-228) with a school-record 10 triples to go with two home runs, 24 RBI and six stolen bases.

In the summer of 2008, he earned the Robert A. McNeece Outstanding Pro Prospect Award as the Cape Cod Baseball League's top pro prospect after batting .348 (56-for-161) with six home runs and 21 RBI for the Chatham A's. His average was fourth in the league as he was among the league leaders in most offensive categories. He was second in the league for runs scored (37) and slugging percentage (.537) and third in hits (56), doubles (12) and extra-base hits (19) while going 10-for-13 in stolen bases.

He was the starting shortstop for the East Division at the Cape Cod League All-Star Game and named most valuable player for the East squad after hitting a game-tying, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning as the East would go on to win, 8-6.
