CORVALLIS, Ore. - CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State junior right-handed pitcher Jorge Reyes has been selected by the San Diego Padres in the 17th round (504th overall) of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.

Reyes is Oregon State's second selection in the 2009 draft, following Ryan Ortiz in the sixth round. Additionally, OSU recruit Andrew Susac was selected in the 16th round (497th overall) by Philadelphia.

Through 2009, his junior campaign, Reyes was 17-8 with a 4.66 earned run average in 53 appearances, 39 of which have been starts. He has worked 230 innings for Oregon State, striking out 196 while walking 79.

In 2009, Reyes wrapped up his junior year with a 6-2 record and 4.20 ERA. He threw 81 1 /3 innings for the Beavers, striking out 75 while walking 29. He capped off the campaign with his first career complete game, scattering 10 hits and five runs over nine runs as the Beavers defeated Texas A&M, 13-5, in an NCAA Regional elimination game.

That win gave Reyes a perfect postseason record as the right-hander has gone 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in five career NCAA postseason starts. Included in that is a 2007 College World Series Most Outstanding Player selection after going 2-0 in helping guide the Beavers to their second straight national title.

Reyes came to the Beavers from Warden High School in Washington where he went undrafted. As a freshman, he was 7-3 with a 3.10 ERA in 24 appearances, 11 starts. He also worked 81 1/3 innings that year, liming opponents to a .239 batting average and 64 strikeouts.

Reyes was 4-3 with a 7.08 ERA in 14 appearances as a sophomore in 2008.

San Diego has now selected three Oregon State players over the last three drafts. In 2007, the Padres selected Mitch Canham in the first round, and in 2008, they took Daniel Robertson in the 33rd round.
