Sam Gaviglio Earns Second Freshman All-America Honor

June 11, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State right-hander Sam Gaviglio was named to the Ping! Baseball Freshman All-America First Team on Thursday.

The honor gives Gaviglio two Freshman All-American honors this year. Last week, he was selected to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team.

The Ashland, Ore., native set an Oregon State freshman record by going 10-1, collecting a 2.73 earned run average in his first season with the Beavers. He won his last seven starts, including a victory in the Fort Worth Regional opener against Texas A&M.

Gaviglio worked 62 2/3 innings in 2009, striking out 55 while walking just nine. Opponents batted .200 against him.

He is one of eight pitchers on Ping!'s first team, with three coming from the Pacific-10 Conference. The pitchers joining Gaviglio from the Pac-10 were UCLA's Trevor Bauer and Arizona State's Mitchell Lambson.

Gaviglio will join the Corvallis Knights for the summer and is expected to make his first start Saturday at Bellingham.
