Women's Rowing's Yasmin Farooq And Vaclav Kacir Named National Coach And Assistant Coach Of The Year By CRCA

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's rowing coaching staff, after guiding the Cardinal to the first team and I Eight national championships in school history, were recognized by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) for their efforts as head coach Yasmin Farooq was named Division I National Coach of the Year, and assistant coach Vaclav Kacir was named Division I Assistant Coach of the Year.
The national honor is the first of Farooq's collegiate coaching career, in which she also took home Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors in 2008. For Kacir, it is his second assistant coach of the year award this season, as he was previously honored by the CRCA as its West Region Assistant Coach of the Year in late May.
Farooq, in just her third year at the Stanford helm has built the Cardinal program into a national force, highlighted by the team's first-ever team and I Eight national titles in May 2009. Under Farooq's tutelage, the top-ranked Stanford I Eight has qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of her three years as head coach, claiming a silver medal in 2008 to go with this season's gold medal.
The I Eight has also reached the medal stand at each of the Pac-10 Championships under Farooq's tenure, claiming silver in 2007 and 2008, and striking gold while setting a new course record at Lake Natoma this past May.
In addition to its national and Pac-10 titles this season, the Stanford I Eight also went undefeated at the Pac-10 Challenge presented by Windermere in March, took second at the Lake Natoma Invitational in mid-April, and defeated cross-bay rival California at The Big Row for the first time since 2002.
In his second season with the Stanford women's rowing team, Kacir guided the Cardinal II Eight to a national bronze medal at the NCAA Championships as well as a silver medal at the Pac-10 Championships, the boat's highest-ever finish at each event.
Under Kacir's guidance, the II Eight also put together a sparkling resume that included winning the gold medal at the Lake Natoma Invitational in mid-April as well as a dual win over California at The Big Row which helped the Cardinal crews sweep the Golden Bears.
