Johnson Takes First in Prelims at USATF Outdoor Championships

California All-American Alysia Johnson paced all runners in the first round of the 800 meters on Thursday at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Current Golden Bears Ryan Young, Michael Coe and Mark Matusak also competed in the first day of the competition.

Johnson, the 2007 NCAA 800-meter champion, clocked a time of 2:04.39 to place first in the preliminary race. The Cal alum will participate in the semifinals tomorrow at 5:55 p.m.

Ryan Young placed 13th overall in the final of the javelin. He recorded a mark of 219-07 (66.92m).

Cal had three runners in the prelims of the 1500 - Coe, Matusak and alumnus David Torrence. Torrence finished first among the three in 17th overall (3:42.40m), while Matusak crossed the finish line at 3:43.29 to take 19th overall. Coe wasn't able to finish the race. Neither Torrence nor Matusak were able to advance to the final.

The USATF Outdoor Championships continue tomorrow through Sunday.
