June 25, 2009

With a pair of match play victories, UCLA junior Sydnee Michaels advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass.

Freshman Stephanie Kono, the stroke play medalist, fell 1-up to 14 year-old Jisoo Park of Korea in the third round.

Michaels rallied from a 1-down deficit to take a 1-up lead with a pair of pars at the 14th and 15th holes. Her bogey at the 16th squared the match and both players made par at the 17th to send it to the final hole. Michaels won the 18th with a birdie.

Park trailed in her match with Kono until the 15th hole, where she made a 15-foot birdie putt to square the match. She won the 16th with a par to go 1 up and the players halved No. 17. Kono needed to win the 18th hole to force extra holes, but her birdie putt rolled over the edge and Park safely two-putted for the win.
