Two Wildcats Invited to Canadian National Team Camp

June 29, 2009

The future of the Arizona women's soccer program looks bright as two incoming freshman, defenders Karli Hedlund and Alex Smith, have been invited to the U-20 Canadian National Team Camp.

For head coach Dan Tobias, this marks the second and third player this summer to be invited to national team camp. Sophomore RENAE CUELLAR was invited last week to partake in the U-20 Mexican National Team Camp.

A native of Edmonton, Canada, Hedlund is fresh off playing for Team Canada in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in New Zealand this past fall and will have some pretty big shoes to fill as she will compete for playing time with the Wildcats losing four-year starter Savanah Levake to graduation.

'Karli has a great presence, she is very strong in the air and you will know when she tackles you and wins the ball, Tobias said. 'Her determined attitude is so important and that will challenge her to strive for daily improvement.'

A native of Calgary, Canada, Smith also played along side teammate Hedlund for Team Canada in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup and will compete for playing time in the back field as the Wildcats defense will be fairly young.

'Alex is very athletic, strong defensively, gets forward very well and simply needs to get adjusted to her new surroundings, shrug off any mistakes and keep growing,' Tobias said. 'I look for her to continue to improve and compete for a spot right away.'

Arizona opens its season on August 23 against UC Irvine in Tucson, Ariz. The game will be played at Murphey Stadium with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
