Motum Scores 22 as Australia Defeats Canada, 88-77

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Washington State University incoming freshman Brock Motum scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Australia defeated Canada, 88-77, Thursday evening NZDT (Wednesday night PDT) in Group C action of the FIBA U19 World Championship.

A native of Brisbane, Australia, Motum went 11-for-16 from the field, while he was second on the team with his 22 points and eight rebounds in 25:47 of action. The 6-foot-9 forward came off the bench to add an assist and a steal. Cody Ellis led Australia (1-0) with 25 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Mangisto Arop led Canada (0-1) with 27 points and 11 rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Rob Gagliardi, Cory Joseph and Kelly Olynyk each added 11 points for Canada.

Australia jumped out to an early 7-0 lead just under two minutes into the first quarter. The Emus lead became 13 after starting the game on a 15-2 run with 6:15 to go in the first period. Canada cut the lead to six, 24-18, to end the quarter after a 10-3 run. The two teams remained close in the second quarter, as Australia took an eight point, 42-34, lead into halftime.

Motum started the third quarter for the Aussies and quickly grabbed three rebounds and scored two points in the first 1:15. Australia continued to slowly add to its lead, as it took a 66-56 lead into the fourth quarter. Motum scored six of Australia's final nine points as it went on to an 88-77 victory.

Motum and Australia continue Group C play as they take on Spain, Friday, July 3 at 5 p.m. NZDT (Thursday, July 2, 10 p.m. PDT). Fellow Cougs DeAngelo Casto and Klay Thompson and the USA squad continue Group B play as they take on France, Friday, July 3 at 10 a.m. NZDT (Thursday, July 2, 3 p.m. PDT).
