July 7, 2009

California Golden Bears' women's gymnastics head coach Cari DuBois has named Don Houlton, formerly of Yale University, as the new assistant women's gymnastics coach.

Don Houlton begins his first season as Assistant Coach for Cal after spending the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach at Yale University.

Before Yale, Houlton spent 21 years as the Director/ Head Coach at Nebraska Gold Gymnastics in Omaha. He has also been its owner since 1993. Before that, he coached at various other gyms in Colorado, Iowa, and Nebraska.

Houlton has been a very active member of USA Gymnastics from the local to the national level. From 1997-2008, Houlton was the Coordinator for the Region IV Training Camp, as well as a member of the National Junior Olympic Program Committee. In addition, he was the Nebraska State Chairman from 1994 to 1997. Houlton has presented at the national Coaches Congress several times, including in 2005 when he was Master Clinician.

Houlton competed for Colorado State University in the final year of the program in Fort Collins, Colo. He spent eight years prior to that competing with the US Gymnastics Federation.

'I am very excited about adding Don to the coaching staff,' said Dubois. 'I really believe he is going to be an excellent addition to Cal gymnastics. After just a few days of working in the gym, I have already seen some strong progress. We are all excited about his ideas and look forward to having him on staff.'
