Anderson Clinches Ticket to Rome

July 8, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS – University of Arizona sophomore-to-be Alyssa Anderson wrapped up a spot on the 2009 USA World Championships roster when it competes later this month in Rome, Italy by finishing in the top four of the women’s 200m free Tuesday night at the Indiana University Natatorium. The four top times in the 200m free earn automatic spots on the 800m free relay team.

Anderson, a Granite Bay, Calif. native, swam a personal best time of 1:58.45 in the 200 meter event. Cal grad Dana Vollmer won the race with a time of 1:56.20. As a freshman this past year, Anderson was a three-time All-American with seventh place overall finishes in the 200y fly and 800y free relay during the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas. Anderson is also the reigning Pac-10 Champion in the 500y free.

Last night Anderson posted a fourth place finish as well, this time in the 400 Freestyle final with an overall time of 4:10.45.

Also swimming in the 200 free final was recently named 2009 Pac-10 Woman of the Year Lacey Nymeyer. Nymeyer finished sixth overall in the event with a time of 1:58.52.  Her position should warrant being included on Team USA once Nationals conclude as each relay team typically takes two alternates.

On Tuesday, two Wildcats just missed possibly making the USA roster as they each finished in third place, one spot away from a likely berth. Marcus Titus went out in 1:00.00 in the 100m Breaststroke, but was behind second-place finisher Eric Shanteau by .44.  Jack Brown, swimming in the 400 I.M. was also third overall with a personal best time of 4:13.71. Florida’s Ryan Lochte won the event overall in 4:06.40.

Tomorrow several Wildcats will be in action headlined by two-time NCAA Individual Champion Lara Jackson in the 50m Freestyle. Also contending for a roster spot will be Annie Chandler in the 100 Breaststroke and Julie Stupp in the 400 IM.

Thursday’s preliminary round gets underway at 6 a.m. Pacific, and the finals are set for 3 p.m. Pacific.  Live video from the finals session will be available at
