Slovic Is Golden At World University Games

July 13, 2009

BELGRADE, Serbia - Former Husky tennis great Alex Slovic captured the gold medal over the weekend at the World University Games in the men's singles draw. Slovic, an All-American at UW who lettered from 2004-07, upset the tourney's No. 1 seed in the final to win the gold for the host country, his native Serbia.

Seeded fourth, Slovic won six matches during his run including an early round win over a former teammate, German's Klaus Jank who played one year for UW in 2006. Slovic, a native of Pancevo, Serbia, matched up against top-seeded Ivan Sergeyev of Ukraine in the final. Sergeyev is currently ranked 309th in the ATP world rankings and has been as high as 257.

The two traded sevice breaks to start the match, and then held serve until the final game of the first set, in which Slovic broke Sergeyev to win the set 7-5. In the next set, both players held serve all the way to a tiebreak, although Slovic had five break points and three set points go by the wayside. Sergeyev won the tiebreak seven points to four to force a third set.

The final frame was a see-saw battle, as Slovic raced out to a 4-0 lead only to have Sergeyev bounce back and take the next four games to knot things at 4-4. Slovic dug in and broke serve for the third time in the set for a 5-4 lead, and then finally served out the match, winning the set 6-4.

The match was just three minutes shy of the three hour mark. In the final set, Slovic had a major edge in winners, hitting 14 to just six for Sergeyev.

'I did not expect the gold, the match was so difficult,' said Slovic. 'When I had match points in the second set he played really well. In the third set I had better concentration which helped and so did support from the stands.'

Slovic is the winningest Husky in school history with 184 combined singles and doubles wins. He was a three-time All-Pac-10 First Team selection, was the 2004 ITA National Freshman of the Year, and reached the NCAA Semifinals as a senior in 2007. This year, playing mostly Future-level tourneys, Slovic has earned career-high rankings in singles (525) and doubles (337).
