Pia Halbig and German team win European Amateur Team Championship

July 15, 2009

Golden Bear junior Pia Halbig helped the German team upset the favored European powerhouses at the European Amateur Team Championship at the Golf and Country Club in Bled, Slovenia. Halbig is a native on Manital, Germany.

After qualifying through the first two rounds of match play in seventh place, the German team made a charge in the finals, with Halbig being one of the deciding factors in the championship. Halbig made an up and down on the final hole in her final match against England which forced a play-off. Halbig parred the 19th hole with her English counterpart bogeying, allowing Germany to clinch the title.

The German squad beat European powerhouses Sweden, Spain and England in the finals to secure the championship.

This is the second time this summer that Halbig has hoisted a golf trophy in Slovenia. In early June, Halbig won the Slovenian International Ladies Championship in Moravske Toplice, Slovenia.

Next up for Halbig will be playing on the European Team for the Vagliano Trophy July 24-25 in Hamburg, Germany. Since 1959, the Vagliano Trophy has been a biennial match between teams from the Continent of Europe and Great Britain & Ireland. This will be Halbig's first time playing as a member of the European squad.Photo Gallery from the European Amateur Team Championships awards ceremony.
