Meet Dwight Roberson

July 16, 2009

The linebacker corps at Oregon State has been highly successful over the past several years, with numerous All-Pac-10 performers and NFL players making their way through Corvallis. With his 61 tackles and two sacks during the 2008 season, Dwight Roberson looks to be on the way to placing his name among other Beaver linebacker greats.

What are the different responsibilities of the strongside and weakside linebackers?

There is really not a lot of difference between the strongside and weakside. It's just a term that we use. Either side does pretty much the same thing. Strongside we call the 'Sam' backer, and the weakside is called the 'Will' backer. It is just different things so we can, say we have a blitz, we can yell out 'Strong Dog', which is for the strong linebacker, or 'Weak Dog'. It is pretty much just a left-right thing. It's not who is better or anything like that.

What are your personal and team goals for the upcoming season?

I want to maybe make All-Pac-10. Maybe lead the Pac-10 in tackles. As a team we want to get to the Rose Bowl.

What NFL player would you say you play most like?

I want to play like LT (Lawrence Taylor). I've always wanted to play like LT since I was a little kid. As far as a comparison I would have to say (former Beaver) Keith Ellison. Coaches compare me to him.

Describe the biggest hit you have had in your career?

My biggest hit I had in my career was during my redshirt freshman year versus Washington on a kickoff. I came down unblocked and made a tackle behind the 20 (yard line).

Who was the best player you played against in high school?

I would have to say that the best player I played against in high school was (former Arizona State quarterback) Rudy Carpenter my sophomore year in the championship game.

What is your favorite moment since you have been at Oregon State?

When we beat USC last year.

Are you doing anything differently to prepare for this season than you have done in the past?

I have been hitting the weight room a lot harder. I've been studying film on past linebackers that have been here and are in the pros now, like Keith Ellison or Joey LaRocque. That has helped me and my game. It's just been more time in the coach's office with Coach Newhouse and Coach Banker, studying film.

What motivates you on and off the field?

Off the field, I would say my mom motivates me since she is always in my ear telling me I have to do well. On the field, I would have to say that I just want to live the dream and move on to the next level. To do that I have to be the best on the field.

If you could trade places with anybody, who could it be?

I would have to say I would want to trade places with Slade Norris right now. He is going to the Raiders to play in the NFL.

What is your relationship with Keith Pankey?

We don't hold a grudge to each other since we are rotating and everything. We are good friends and we are playing our roles as rotating outside linebackers.

Who is the coolest guy on the team?

I would have to say the coolest person on the team is James Rodgers.
