USA Team Update: Stanford Trio Helps U.S. Capture World Cup Gold
July 21, 2009
Oklahoma City, Okla. - Led by current Cardinal players Alissa Haber and Ashley Hansen and alum Lauren Lappin'06, the United States Women's National Team captured the gold medal at the KFC World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City yesterday.
Facing Australia in the gold medal game, the three Stanford players created the game-winning rally in the third inning. Lappin broke the scoreless tie by belting a leadoff homerun to right field, and Hansen followed right behind her with a double to left. Two outs later, Haber came up and singled up the middle to score Hansen - the game's eventual winning run. Haber then scored on a hit by Andrea Duran, making all three runs in the USA's 3-1 win scored by Stanford players. Lappin, Hansen and Haber all started the championship game and combined for five of Team USA's seven hits.
Haber and Hansen, two of only three players on the roster with collegiate eligibility remaining, were both key players throughout the tournament. Haber started five of the team's six games in left field, while Hansen made a start in right field and two at second base. Lappin, a 2008 Olympian, played catcher and shortstop and made three starts behind the plate.
Haber was 9-for-14 (.643) with two home runs, seven RBI and seven runs in her five appearances. In addition to her game-winning hit in the championship game, Haber provided critical home runs against Japan on Saturday and Australia on Sunday.
Hansen, the youngest member of the team, was 4-for-9 (.444) in the event. On Sunday, she belted a grand slam against Australia to lift Team USA into the championship game.
Lappin was 5-for-9 (.556) at the plate and appeared in all six games. Her weekend was highlighted by her homerun and 2-for-3 performance in the gold medal game.
Team USA cruised through five round robin games, winning all five by at least five runs. An 8-0 win over Australia on Sunday secured Team USA's spot in the gold medal game, where it beat the Aussies again yesterday.
Next up, Haber and Lappin will be part of the roster for the Japan Cup, which takes place in Sendai, Japan, July 31-Aug. 2. Hansen will compete at the Pan American Qualifier in Maracay, Venezuela, July 31-Aug. 9.
