When in Rome...Cats Swim Fast

July 29, 2009

ROME – Nicolas Nilo and Lyndon Ferns were the Wildcat standouts today on day four of the 13th World Championships in Rome.

The men’s 100m freestyle field included seven current or former Arizona swimmers. Even more impressively, all seven finished within the top 35 out of 220+ competitors from around the globe.

Nilo, Ferns and Joel Greenshields made it “back”, meaning they qualified for the semifinals later in the day. In the semifinal, Nilo swam a blazing 47.78, good enough for fourth overall and a spot in the final heat tomorrow. Ferns will join Nilo after going 47.96 and finishing seventh overall.

In the men’s 200 individual medley semifinal, Darian Townsend finished 11th overall with a time of 1:58.50. Ryan Lochte was the top qualifier with a time of 1:55.18. Townsend qualified for the semifinal heat by turning in a time of 1:58.96 in the preliminary round.
