Coach and Player Quotes from 2009 Pac-10 Football Media Day
July 30, 2009
California head coach Jeff Tedford
'This is an exciting time of the year as always. We are excited about the prospect of this season. I am happy with the team chemistry and the leadership, obviously Jahvid Best plays a huge role in that. We play a very tough schedule. Our conference is going to be very challenging. In non-conference we will play Minnesota on the road. We feel like it will be a challenging season for us. Like I said, we do have some leadership that is back on the team. We have a lot of experience and expectations. We are excited to get these guys back on the field.'
On another 9 a.m. start at Minnesota this year like at Maryland last year:
'I know there was a lot made of the Maryland trip last year. I think we did a good job of acclimating ourselves for the game. I didn't notice when we left the locker room any sleepy guys walking around. I think them jumping out on us early was because of lack of execution. This year we are looking into maybe traveling a day earlier to see and compare how that goes.'
On Cal's offense:
'We've been very fortunate to have great tailbacks. I think our running back coach does a great job of preparing those guys. Our offensive line has done a nice job of opening holes. We've had a lot of talent there. We have been fortunate to have tandems and quality backs. Our goal is to stay balanced.'
On expectations of quarterback Kevin Riley:
'I think his consistency will be important for us to achieve our goals. I really believe that Kevin has matured a lot. I think his experience puts him a step ahead. I think he has worked really hard fundamentally to more consistent. I think we will also try to assume that leadership role.'
California running back Jahvid Best
On the absence of center Alex Mack:
'I think the biggest thing that we are going to miss about Alex is the intensity that he brought to practice. We would be at practice some days and the guys would be looking kind of dead and Alex would get everybody up and we'd have a great practice that day.'
On if he is the fastest person in the Pac-10:
'I would like to think so. There is a lot speed out there though. I don't really know if I'm the fastest.'
