Coach and Player Quotes from 2009 Pac-10 Football Media Day

July 30, 2009

USC head coach Pete Carroll

Opening Statement:
'I'm excited to be here. Every year that I've been here we have always set our sights on maximizing our potential. We are getting out there and trying to figure out how we can be the best we can be. We have the opportunity to have a terrific football season with the kids that we have. It's a very exciting time for us. There is so much at stake. It's fun to be a part of. We have a tremendous challenge in front of us. We have to recapture that level of intensity that we have every year.'

On safety Taylor Mays:
'He is a guy in our program that is the epitome of maximizing his experience at USC. He had a chance to go out last year, but he wanted to graduate. He wanted to see what it was like to be a senior and have a chance to be a leader of this team. He wanted to maximize his ability for the next level.'

On teams in the Pac-10 Conference:
'Our conference is so talented. Year in and year out, without question, they are our most difficult games come right from our conference opponents. I think it's the best conference in the country and we show it by the way we perform. We show it by the level of coaching and by the level of the players. It makes us so strong at the end of the year. It gets us ready to play in the bowl games. It just presents great challenges.'

USC safety Taylor Mays

On USC having big, tough safeties:
'The defense that we run is an NFL style defense that we have to be fast, physical safeties. We take pride in having that style of defense. That is just the style of defense we play at USC and Coach Carroll coaches.'
