Vollmer Places Fifth in 100-Free Final at World Championships

ROME - Former California star Dana Vollmer finished in fifth place in the 100-meter freestyle final on Friday evening in the 2009 FINA World Championships at the Stadia del Nuoto. Vollmer posted a time of 53.30 to finish behind U.S. teammate Amanda Weir (4th in 53.12) and gold medalist Britta Steffen (world-record 52.07) of Germany.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, former Golden Bear Sherry Tsai is slated to swim in the 50-meter freestyle heats. With Vollmer's proficiency in the 100 fly - she raced to a U.S.-best finish (tied for fifth) in the final at worlds - and 100 free, the Granbury, Texas, native could be chosen to swim in the 4x100-medley relay heats tomorrow morning and, if the U.S. team advances, the relay final tomorrow evening.

The World Championships conclude on Sunday, Aug. 2.
